If you've ever worked in an office, you've probably heard of "HR" in the workplace a lot. But do you really understand what HR does? What is the HR department responsible for? Or what do they actually do for the company and its employees?

Also known as a company's "human resources" team, an HR department is a group of professionals dedicated to managing, supporting and organizing employees. The experts on this team are experts in building and maintaining professional relationships. They handle the recruitment and onboarding of new talent, resolve workplace incidents, and even plan training and development programs for employees' career development.

What is the human resources department? An introduction
RH stands for Human Resources. Their names are pretty self-explanatory. In an organization, the human resource department is responsible for managing the employees of the organization (i.e. human resources). Remember that teams are often the most important resource any business can have, which means making sure they are happy and fulfilled in their respective jobs and have plenty of room to grow is critical to any business. In addition, companies are also responsible for the safety and well-being of their employees in the workplace. This also falls under the purview of the HR department.

It is the HR specialist's job to ensure that the company is able to get the most out of the talented team members it hires. At the same time, they also provide services for employees to ensure that they have the best work experience with the help of a positive company culture.

Fundamentally, HR is responsible for ensuring that the companies they work for have a solid roster of properly compensated and effectively trained team members. They are responsible for all employee-based activities involved in running a business – from administering payroll, hiring and firing, and even administering employee benefits.



HR professionals can also help ensure that employees stay happy within the company and fit into their organization's culture. That's because companies with happy, engaged employees typically see a 17% increase in employee productivity and a 41% reduction in absenteeism.

The main job responsibilities of the human resources department

While the exact function of an HR department usually depends on many factors, some of the more common responsibilities include:

Recruiting: Finding and recruiting promising employees is one of the main goals of an HR department. Human resources professionals examine a company's needs and goals to find employees who are suitable for certain roles. They also funnel qualified candidates into the company's talent pipeline and can help with interviews.
Recruiting: In addition to targeting key candidates, HR professionals make job offers and negotiate benefits and salary to the most qualified candidates. They usually handle the onboarding process, making sure all the correct paperwork is done before team members come to work.
Administration: The human resources department handles various forms of administrative work related to managing employees. They can create work schedules for employees and help fill out various forms and documents. They also help ensure that employees find the right complaint channel if they are unhappy with working conditions for any reason.
Wages and Compensation: HR is often responsible for overseeing compensation, from benefits like paid time off to payroll. They use payroll software to address any payroll issues employees may have. They can also help team members with questions about health benefits, tax withholding, and vacation options.
Training and Development: Many HR departments also invest in various training and development strategies for their employees. They can help ensure employees' licenses and certifications are current and seek out new educational opportunities. They can also work with employees on career development and succession planning tasks, or prepare candidates for promotion to more senior roles.
Trigger: Often the least attractive part of the HR role, these professionals are also responsible for removing employees from the system when a hire is unsuccessful. They can conduct exit interviews, ensure final pay is turned in, and even advise employees if they decide to leave the company amicably.
